One evening before dinner, Jordan sat my wife and me down and shared words that changed our family forever:

“I’ve come out. I’m gay.”

I was surprised. He told us he had carried this truth since junior high, keeping it hidden even from himself for years.

That evening, we listened as he told us about the fear and isolation he had lived with.

For him, coming out was not only a moment of liberation, but also of trust. He trusted us enough to share the truth about himself, not knowing how we might respond.

I am a pastor. My father was a pastor too. I grew up steeped in conservative Christianity and was taught to view marriage solely as a covenant between a man and a woman.

While I had never been one to thunder from the pulpit against LGBTQ people, I also had not stood up in their defense.

The church tradition I was raised in did not accept same-sex relationships, and I had never thought to question it.

Years earlier, when Jordan was just a boy, I had even been turned down for a pastoral role in New Hampshire after I admitted I was not comfortable performing a same-sex wedding.

That was where I stood then. That was all I knew. My faith was still evolving, slowly and quietly.

So why did I embrace Jordan so immediately? The answer is that it wasn’t in spite of my faith — it was because of it.

The same Bible verses that some people use to condemn relationships like Jordan’s also hold story after story about God’s surprising, unconditional, and boundary-breaking love — a love that refuses to be boxed in by human limits.

When I embraced Jordan that day, it didn’t feel like abandoning my faith. It felt like living it out in its truest form.

A few years later, I had the honor of officiating Jordan’s wedding to his husband, Jake. I had led many weddings over the years, watching couples in love bind themselves to each other for life.

In those years, our family lived mostly paycheck to paycheck. We carpooled to school and sports, and most of what I made at my near minimum wage job in the Bates College cafeteria went straight to gas for our 1994 Subaru Legacy.

When heating oil prices rose, we put on another sweater, wool socks and extra blanket. Twenty years later, too many parents are still saying, “We just can’t afford it.”

This crisis could be even worse

The current crisis created by the weeks-long closure of the Strait of Hormuz could be even worse than the crisis in the late 2000s. In rural Maine, there is no public transit. We’re a driving state; it’s not a choice, it’s our only option.

Maine remains the most heating-oil-dependent state in the country, with over half of our homes still burning oil to stay warm. There is no quick substitute. Families are simply going to pay more at a moment when they can least afford to. But here’s what could make this crisis worse than before: electricity.

Natural gas generates over half the electricity on the New England grid. The Strait of Hormuz closure isn’t just spiking oil prices; it’s disrupting the global natural gas market. New England’s already constrained gas supply will get squeezed further, pushing our electricity bills higher by over 55% over the last decade. Maine families are about to get hit from every direction: at the pump, at the furnace and on the electric bill.

So where is Paul LePage?

He’s bragged about his close friendship with Donald Trump, but he’s said nothing about the war in Iran or alarm for how it will drive up costs in our district. LePage, who’s spent winters in Florida since leaving the Blaine House, told Fox News that a reason he’s running for Congress is “I have a friend in the White House.”

When asked to name a single policy he disagrees with Trump on, he drew a blank. The last thing our district needs is a congressman whose loyalty lies with the president, not with constituents and the people who pay the bills.

Here’s my plan

Here’s what Congress should do. First, fully fund LIHEAP, a program over 45,000 Maine households depend on for heating assistance that Donald Trump is trying to eliminate. Second, ban crude oil and liquid national gas exports for the duration of the crisis. America produces more oil and gas than any country on Earth, but we’re letting energy companies ship it overseas for more profit while prices spike here at home.

American energy should serve American families first. The people of Maine shouldn’t have to choose between filling the tank and keeping the lights on because their congressman won’t stand up to the president when he is wrong. We deserve and need a representative who will.

I’ve held 32 town halls across Maine over the past year. This man didn’t come to talk. He came to intimidate.

He repeated lies about undocumented immigrants voting in our elections. I told him the truth: there is no evidence. None. It’s a lie designed to turn Mainers against our own neighbors. I told him that targeting Maine’s Somali community is simply racist. The room applauded.

That’s when he snapped.

He called me a “faggocrat.” He told every person in that room to go to hell. Then he looked at me and said: “I’m not finished with you, jackass.” And he stormed out.

I’m gay. I’m not hiding that from anyone. I’ve been called worse. I finished the town hall.

When it was over, two people on our team went outside to make sure he wasn’t lingering in the parking lot. He was. And the first thing he told them was that he had guns in his car.

Our team didn’t run. They did something courageous. They stayed, and they listened. For 15 minutes, in that parking lot, they let this man talk. About Social Security. About his family’s history with the KKK.

And after all of it, he apologized. To our team, and loosely to me. Then he got in his car and drove home.

That’s a human being who has been fed rage by people in power who will never have to stand in that parking lot.

On January 6th, I was barricaded in my office on Capitol Hill while a mob attacked the building. I was serving as Chief of Staff to a member of Congress. After that day, I founded an organization dedicated to combating political violence in America. This is my life’s work.

Town Hall #33 is coming up on Monday in Milo. And #34 after that. I will keep showing up in every corner of Maine’s 2nd district. I will keep taking every question from every person who walks through the door. I’m not scared and I’m not backing down.

I’m a Democrat, and I’ll say what too few in my party will: our side has serious questions to answer. Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell — Maine’s most prominent political figure — appeared over 300 times in the files; FBI records contain a woman’s allegation that Epstein trafficked her to him. A victim’s attorney alleges a 15-year-old girl was flown to Epstein’s townhouse for sex with former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers. Obama’s White House Counsel, Kathryn Ruemmler, was one of three people Epstein called from jail. She called him “Uncle Jeffrey.” It’s now beyond any reasonable doubt that Democrat Bill Richardson, the former cabinet secretary and former governor of New Mexico, lied about his history with Epstein. He avoided any accountability before his death in 2023, but those around him, the people who knew what was going on and did nothing, must face accountability.

Republicans are equally implicated and equally protected. Former President Trump socialized with Epstein for years. His administration tried to block the release of these files, and his DOJ has investigated only Democrats while shielding allies like Elon Musk, whose emails show repeated attempts to visit Epstein’s properties. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick visited Epstein’s island despite claiming otherwise. Alexander Acosta, Trump’s Labor Secretary, engineered the original sweetheart plea deal that let Epstein walk.

The billionaire donor class bankrolled the silence. Les Wexner was named a co-conspirator in FBI documents. Leon Black paid Epstein $170 million. Glenn Dubin, whose hedge fund donated to both the DNC and GOP senators, was accused under oath by a trafficking survivor. Bill Gates and Reid Hoffman visited Epstein’s island and introduced him to Silicon Valley elite and titans of big business. JPMorgan settled with victims for $290 million. The institutions that should have stopped this profited from it.

Congress Must Establish a Bipartisan Select Committee on the Epstein Files

The current process is failing. Despite the Transparency Act passing 427 to 1, the DOJ released documents with hundreds of pages blacked out, tracked which members of Congress searched the files, and dragged its feet. The Oversight Committee investigation has devolved into partisan finger-pointing. A bipartisan Select Committee would change that. It should be charged with:

• A complete public accounting of how the DOJ, FBI, and Bureau of Prisons failed victims — including the 2008 plea deal and Epstein’s death in custody

• Identifying those who enabled, participated in, or covered up the trafficking operation — and referring criminal evidence for prosecution

• Exposing how elite wealth buys impunity — the role of banks, law firms, and political donors in shielding Epstein

• Legislative reforms to strengthen trafficking laws, mandate transparency in investigations involving public officials, and end elite donor influence over law enforcement

• Justice for survivors — centering victims’ testimony and recommending restitution measures

Here in Maine’s Second District, we believe accountability shouldn’t depend on your net worth or your connections. This is the defining accountability test of our time.

Citizens United Broke Our Democracy. I’ll Fight To Overturn It.

The foundation of our democracy is trust — that every eligible citizen can vote, every vote is counted, and elections are safe and secure. But that foundation has been shattered by dark money, gerrymandering, and relentless attacks on voting rights.

In 2010, the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision opened the floodgates. It told corporations and billionaires that their money equals speech — and that they could spend unlimited amounts to drown out the voices of ordinary Americans. The result? A political system where the wealthiest donors have more influence over who represents you in Congress than you do.

I’ve seen this up close.

When I was Vice President of End Citizens United, I created the No Corporate PAC Pledge, a first of its kind national effort to get candidates to reject donations from corporate PACs. Before I started, just 1% of Democrats in Congress rejected corporate money. Now, over 20%+ reject it (and growing every election). I also helped spearhead the effort to pass H.R.1, the For the People Act, which would have reduced corruption by strengthening ethics rules, cracking down on dark money, and putting more power back in the hands of voters instead of special interests.

I know exactly how dark money corrupts our system, and I know what it takes to fix it.

In Congress, I’ll fight to:

• Pass a Constitutional Amendment to overturn Citizens United — because elections should be decided by voters, not billionaires.

Root Out Corruption

Here’s a fact that should make your blood boil: Members of Congress can legally trade individual stocks while they have access to non-public information that directly affects those stocks. They sit in classified briefings about defense contracts, pharmaceutical regulations, and tech policy — and then trade on what they learn.

For too long, wealthy donors, big corporations, and lobbyists have had way too much influence in Washington. They use their money and access to buy tax breaks and special favors, while families in Maine pay the price. I’ve watched it happen. I’ve seen the meetings. I know the playbook.

In Congress, I’ll fight to:

• Ban members of Congress from trading individual stocks. Period. If you’re making decisions that affect the market, you shouldn’t be allowed to profit from those decisions.

• Implement a lifetime ban on former members of Congress becoming lobbyists. The revolving door between Congress and K Street is one of the most corrupting forces in our politics, and it needs to be slammed shut.

• Strengthen ethics rules and create an enforceable code of conduct for Congress — with real consequences for those who violate them.

I’ve spent my career standing up to the powerful and well-connected. In Congress, I’ll keep fighting to put people ahead of special interests. I’ll never owe a single cent to any corporation or lobbyist.

Reform the Supreme Court

Our highest court should not be controlled by partisan politics. Right now, there are zero enforceable ethics rules for Supreme Court justices. Zero. They can accept lavish gifts from billionaires, refuse to recuse themselves from cases where they have glaring conflicts of interest, and face absolutely no consequences.

We saw this play out in real time when justices accepted undisclosed luxury vacations and private jet travel from wealthy political donors — and then ruled on cases that directly affected those donors’ interests. That’s not justice. That’s corruption.

I support meaningful Supreme Court reforms, including:

• Establishing a binding code of ethics for justices — because they are the only federal officials in the country who operate without one.

• Requiring justices to recuse themselves in cases where they have financial or personal conflicts of interest.

• Limiting terms through a rotation system so that no single justice holds unchecked power for decades.

An independent judiciary is essential to our democracy. These reforms aren’t about any one party controlling the court — they’re about ensuring the American people can trust the court to be fair and impartial.

Crack Down on Corporate Lobbyists

Let me tell you what I saw firsthand in Washington. Corporate lobbyists don’t just have a seat at the table. They practically set the table. They write the legislation. They host the fundraisers. They hire former members of Congress and their staff to come back and lobby their old colleagues. And when the votes are cast, those lobbyists get what they paid for.

Meanwhile, families in Maine who are worried about the cost of groceries, childcare, and healthcare don’t get a say.

Foreign governments have lobbyists in Washington, too. But working families in Lewiston and Rumford and Houlton? They don’t have a lobbyist. That has to change.

In Congress, I’ll fight to:

• Ban lobbyists from giving money to members of Congress, political parties, or PACs. If you’re paid to influence legislation, you shouldn’t be allowed to fund the people who write it.

• Close the revolving door by stopping members of Congress and senior officials from cashing out as lobbyists — and putting longer cooling-off periods in place for top staff.

• Make all lobbying meetings and spending reports available to the public immediately, in plain English. Not buried in filings that nobody can find or read.

• Give real teeth to watchdogs like the Office of Congressional Ethics so they can actually investigate and hold lawmakers accountable.

This isn’t complicated. It’s about making sure Washington works for Mainers — not for lobbyists and big corporations.

The start of this year has made something painfully clear. The rule of law in this country is under attack.

Before the new year had even settled in, this administration removed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro without congressional authorization. Days later, ICE agents in Minneapolis shot and killed Renée Good, a mother and a U.S. citizen. By the end of the month, another American citizen, Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, was killed by ICE agents. These are not isolated incidents. They are part of a pattern, one where constitutional limits are ignored and accountability is treated as optional.

Then ICE brought that same lawlessness to Maine.

Operation “Catch of the Day”

Under the cruelly named “Operation Catch of the Day,” ICE targeted members of our Somali community. Lewiston, my hometown, along with other communities across our district, were targeted. That is not who we are. Maine is one community. We look out for our neighbors, and we do not look the other way when power is abused.

Mainers have shown up in response — big time. In Lewiston, Farmington, Bangor, and across the state, people are standing together against intimidation, against cruelty, and against an administration that believes masks and force can replace the Constitution. We reject that. We always have.

This campaign is about drawing a clear line for democracy, for the rule of law, and for the dignity of every person who calls Maine home.

We’re Near A Breaking Point

Faith in our democracy is near a breaking point. People in Maine and across the country are deeply frustrated with the direction of our government, and for good reason. But frustration alone does not change anything. November gives us a real opportunity to act.

We’re building the resources it takes to defeat Paul LePage and keep this district blue. Since April, our campaign has received thousands of contributions from supporters just like you. You’ve helped us raise over $1.2 million since entering the race for Maine’s Second District.

Why This Matters to Me

As Chief of Staff for a Member of Congress, I was on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021. I witnessed an assault on the very foundation of our democracy and republic.

We were trapped in our office for hours, hearing the sounds of violence out on the Capitol Lawn, and glued to the TV as violent insurrectionists stormed the Capitol to overturn the result of a free and fair election. It is terrifying to think how close our democracy came to the brink of collapse that day, all because of Donald Trump’s incitement based on lies about a stolen election.

After living through that day, I refuse to accept Donald Trump and the far-right’s rewriting of history, downplaying the historic significance of the January 6 Insurrection. Nor do I think Donald Trump’s re-election in 2024 and pardoning of the insurrectionists should diminish the historic crisis for our democracy he instigated. If anything, the subsequent erosion of democratic norms and institutions must inspire Americans never to forget the tragedy of January 6th and to redouble our commitment to restoring a bipartisan consensus for our democracy and constitutional republic.

I’ve Dedicated My Career To This Work

In the wake of the January 6th Insurrection, I founded democracyFIRST, a cross-partisan organization dedicated to restoring a bipartisan consensus for the core, nonpartisan principles that underpin our democracy. democracyFIRST was one of the leading political groups focused on defeating Trump-backed election deniers running for state and county offices that oversee election administration and certification in the Presidential Battleground States. The Path Forward

We are in a moment of crisis for our country and democracy. What we do this year will decide whether future elections truly reflect the will of the people. There is nothing partisan about defending the Rule of Law and the Constitution. Neither party owns American democracy; we all share it, and we all must defend it.

I believe we can meet this moment, but only if we are clear eyed about the threats and resolute in our defense of democratic norms. Donald Trump is chewing up and spitting out our Constitution, and Mike Johnson’s Republican Majority is doing NOTHING to stop him. This is just another example of how deeply unserious the Democratic Party establishment can be about power and change.

When people show up, especially when it is uncomfortable, inconvenient, or bitterly cold, it sends a message that cannot be ignored. It says we will not be intimidated into silence. It says we are willing to give our time, our energy, and sometimes our safety to stand up for what is right. It says that what is happening is so wrong that we refuse to look away.

A Small State, A Loud Signal

Here in Maine, that message carries extra weight. When you stand on a bridge in the dead of winter, when the wind cuts through every layer and your hands go numb, you are telling every driver who passes, and everyone who later sees a photo online, that this moment matters. That injustice is not abstract. That it is happening here, now, to people we know.

I see it every week. Thousands of Mainers gathering peacefully, often on short notice, to say no. No to lawlessness. No to cruelty. No to fear being used as a political weapon. When people say protest does not matter, I wish they could see what I see in those moments. The quiet conversations. The strangers introducing themselves. The relief on someone’s face when they realize they are not alone in their anger or despair.

Hope in the Darkness

Protests build community. They give hope not only to the people who show up, but to the many more who are watching from a distance, wondering if anyone else feels the way they do. They ask questions. Why are people out there? What happened? And in that curiosity, a door opens. People get involved. They volunteer. They organize. Some decide to run for office themselves.

Yes, we have to win elections. That is nonnegotiable. But elections do not exist in a vacuum. They are shaped by moments of moral clarity, by public pressure, by people refusing to normalize what should never be normal.

I am proud of Mainers for understanding this instinctively.

We Have Been Here Before

When this administration invaded Venezuela to take over their oil fields, pushing us toward another war without accountability or respect for the law, people showed up. I was in Bangor the next day, standing on a bridge with a hundred people in the cold, saying no blood for oil, not in our name.

In 2003, after Somali refugees had begun building new lives in Lewiston, a group of neo-Nazis announced a hate rally to send a message that these families were not welcome. The response was not silence. It was not waiting for the next election. It was a peace march.

Five thousand people marched in a city of thirty thousand. Families, neighbors, faith leaders, kids holding signs. I was thirteen years old, walking with my family, and I still remember it. That march said, physically and unmistakably, this is your home. You belong here. We will not let fear or hate drive you away.

When that many people show up, it changes something. It changed me.

Who Shows Up Matters

That is why I believe it matters who shows up now.

If someone is asking for your vote and telling you they understand how high the stakes are, ask a simple question: where were you? When people gathered on bridges. When communities marched. When neighbors stood up for each other. Were they there as just another person, lending their voice, or were they nowhere to be found?

I notice who keeps showing up. I see the same faces at demonstrations, at picket lines, at rallies for workers, nurses, and immigrants. Not for the cameras. Not just when they announce they are running for office. But because they believe, deeply, that this moment demands participation.

Why I Chose to Run

I try to do the same. I have shown up in cities and small towns across Maine. On No Kings Day in June, I stood in solidarity with folks in Gouldsboro and Cherryfield. I have marched with nurses in Bangor, graduate workers in Orono, and neighbors in towns that rarely make the news.

One of the most important days for me was standing on the bridge between Damariscotta and Newcastle during the coldest days of winter last year. People of all ages waved American flags and held signs, saying this is not who we are. Driving past those demonstrations, and standing in them, helped push me to do something I never expected to do.

It helped push me to run for Congress.

I believe running for office is the highest form of public service. It is not something you do for ambition or status. You step up when your community needs you. I was inspired by neighbors who refused to sink into despair after Trump returned to power. They organized. They demonstrated. We reminded each other that democracy only works if people participate.

Standing With Our Neighbors

Since then, I have had the honor of speaking at demonstrations across our state and our district. In Boothbay Harbor, on the anniversary of Lexington and Concord, nearly eight hundred people gathered in the cold to recommit to peaceful resistance. In my hometown of Lewiston-Auburn, I spoke to a crowd on Labor Day, to stand in solidarity with workers. In Cherryfield, more than a hundred people showed up in a small town on No Kings Day, hours after a horrific political assassination, to stand together in grief and resolve.

Just last Saturday, over a thousand people gathered to stand in solidarity with our Somali neighbors and other refugee communities targeted by this administration’s Operation Catch of the Day. These are our neighbors. Their children go to school with ours. When we show up, we send a clear message: we will not let fear drive you away.

The Cost of Courage

We must also acknowledge the cost. We have lost people in this struggle. I attended a vigil in Farmington for Alex Pretti on Wednesday night, who lost his life while courageously expressing his right to oppose injustice—just a week after Renee Good was murdered by masked federal agents.

The goal of violence and intimidation is to make us cower. If we stay home out of fear, they win. Alex didn’t stay home. He showed up. We honor his courage by continuing the work, not just of protecting our democracy, but of reforming it so it actually works for everyday people again.

This Is How Change Has Always Happened

History teaches us this lesson over and over again.

The civil rights movement did not win because people waited patiently. It won because ordinary people engaged in extraordinary acts of nonviolent resistance. They marched. They protested. They got arrested. They forced the country to confront injustice it preferred not to see. That is how we got the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

Peaceful protest is not chaos. It is discipline. It is love over hate. It is courage over fear.

No Kings Is a Promise

Our democracy is not working the way it should. Too many people rightfully feel locked out, ignored, and powerless. Fixing that will take organizing, reform, and new leadership willing to fight every day for working people. It will take winning elections and delivering real change.

We need leaders who understand that “No Kings Day” isn’t just a slogan—it’s a promise.

Abraham Lincoln once said, “Right makes might.” The MAGA movement believes that brute force and intimidation make them right. They are wrong. When we stand up for truth, when we choose peace over violence, and when we choose love over hate, we win.

We have to win the elections this November. We have to take back the House and the Senate. But we cannot wait for Election Day to make our voices heard.
